How to Check RTP Yourself: 5 Simple Steps

The RTP a casino is actually running is right there in the game - if you know where to look. You don't need lab access or third-party tools. This guide shows the exact 5 steps we use on every slot we test, plus what to do with the number once you have it.

The 5-Step Method We Use on Every Slot We Test

This is the exact process we follow. It takes about 2 minutes per slot. No tools required - just the game itself and a published RTP source to compare against.

01
Open the game in real-money mode at the casino
This is important. Demo mode sometimes shows different RTP figures - or the same figure regardless of what the casino has configured. Always check from a logged-in real-money session. The RTP shown in that mode is the one the game engine is actually set to deliver at that casino.
✕ Don't use demo mode - it may not reflect the casino's configured variant
02
Find the game info, rules, or paytable screen
Every certified slot must display its RTP somewhere accessible to the player. Look for a button labelled Info, Rules, Paytable, ?, or the three-bar menu icon. It's usually in the top corner of the game frame. On mobile it may be behind a settings icon.
ⓘ Location varies by provider - see the provider guide below if you can't find it
03
Find the RTP figure - note the exact decimal
The RTP is typically listed near the bottom of the game info screen, sometimes labelled "Return to Player" or "Theoretical RTP". Write down the full figure including decimals - 94.25%, not "about 94%". A 2pp gap is easy to miss if you're rounding. Some slots show a range (e.g. 92.37%-96.26%) - the figure in brackets or listed as "current" is the configured variant.
✓ Note the exact decimal - small gaps cost real money over a session
04
Look up the provider's published maximum RTP
The provider publishes the maximum certified RTP for each slot - usually on their website, in their game library, or in trade press coverage. Our database lists the published max alongside what we recorded at each casino. The difference between these two numbers is the gap the casino has introduced by choosing a lower variant.
ⓘ Use our database to skip this step - we've already looked up the max for each slot we've tested
05
Calculate the gap and decide whether to play
Subtract the in-game RTP from the published max. A 0pp gap means the casino is running the best available variant - as good as it gets. A 1-2pp gap is common and acceptable. Anything above 3pp is a meaningful difference - equivalent to hundreds of dollars in extra expected cost over a long session. Use the gap evaluator below to put a dollar figure on it.
✓ 0pp = max variant, 1-2pp = acceptable, 3pp+ = significant cost
If the RTP isn't shown at all: That's a red flag on its own. Licensed casinos operating under MGA or UKGC rules are required to display RTP to players. A missing figure either means it's buried very deep in the rules, or the casino is operating with less oversight. Either way - note it and factor it in. We log hidden RTPs separately in our database.

Where to Find RTP by Provider - It's Not Always Obvious

Each provider puts the RTP in a slightly different place. Here's where to look for the providers in our database.

Hacksaw Gaming
Info button › Game Rules tab
Listed as "RTP" near the top of the rules section. Shows range if multiple variants exist - the lower figure is the current configuration.
Pragmatic Play
≡ menu › Game Rules
Listed as "Return to Player" toward the bottom of the rules page. Single figure shown - that's the configured variant.
Play'n GO
Info icon › Paytable › last page
Navigate to the last page of the paytable. RTP is shown as a percentage - sometimes a range with the current figure noted.
BGaming
Info button › Game Info tab
Listed under "RTP" in the game info panel. Single figure - the configured variant for this casino.
Yggdrasil
? icon › Info section
RTP shown in the general game information section, usually listed as a percentage range with the current variant indicated.
Wazdan
Info › Game Rules
Listed in the game rules section. Wazdan slots offer a volatility level picker in-game - RTP may vary slightly by volatility setting.
Spinomenal
≡ menu › Paytable
Scroll to the end of the paytable. RTP shown as a single figure.
OnlyPlay
Info button › Rules
Listed in the rules section under "RTP". OnlyPlay typically runs mid-to-high variants - we've recorded what we found at each casino.
General rule: If you open the paytable and don't see an RTP on the first screen, scroll to the last page of the rules section. Almost every provider puts it there. If you still can't find it after 2 minutes, treat it as a hidden RTP and note it as such.

Gap Evaluator - What the RTP Difference Costs You

Enter the in-game RTP you found, the provider's published maximum, and your typical session details. The evaluator shows the expected extra cost of the gap over your session.

RTP Gap Cost Evaluator

The Le Zeus example above uses our real Pistolo reading (92.37%) against the certified maximum (96.26%). Over 500 spins at $1/spin, that 3.89pp gap costs an extra $19.45 in expected losses - on top of what the casino would already take at the max variant. Over a monthly session that compounds significantly.

Pre-Spin Checklist - Tick These Before You Bet

Use this before starting any session. Click each item to check it off.

I checked the in-game RTP from a real-money session - not demo mode and not from a review site quoting the published max.
I looked up the provider's published maximum and know the gap between that and what this casino is running.
The gap is 2pp or less. If it's above 3pp, I've decided whether that extra expected cost fits my budget.
I've set a session budget and I know roughly what the expected cost is at this RTP for my planned number of spins.
If I have an active bonus, I know the slot contribution rate and have checked whether this slot is eligible. Some bonuses exclude certain providers.
The RTP is actually displayed in the game. If I couldn't find it after a reasonable search, I'm treating it as a hidden figure and factoring that in.
Gap found What it means Recommended action
0pp Casino is running the max certified variant Best case - play at the best available conditions
0.01-1pp Minor variance from max - still a good configuration Acceptable - minor expected cost difference
1-2pp Casino has chosen a mid-tier variant Common and acceptable - be aware of the session cost
2-3pp Noticeably below max - worth considering alternatives Check if another casino runs a higher variant for this slot
3pp+ Low variant - significantly higher house edge Weigh the cost carefully - or find a better-configured casino
Hidden RTP not displayed - less transparency Treat cautiously - consider playing elsewhere if you care about RTP

The 5-step method in this guide is exactly what we apply to every slot in our database. The whole process takes under 2 minutes once you know where each provider puts the figure. The most important habit is checking in real-money mode - demo mode RTP is unreliable as a proxy for the casino's configured variant.
